Tim Ridley was born in 1963 in North London and then lived in various places in southern England before being a freelance photographer for 17 years in London. In 2007 he did a foundation course in Fine Art at the City Lit. And he is now starting his third year at Chelsea doing a BA in Fine Art, which involved a three month erasmus exchange in Berlin at UDK.

I make work as a reaction to the differences, both real and perceived, that form part of our contemporary experience. I aim to discuss, examine and create metaphors for these differences. The gulf we imagine between ourselves and nature is I believe not only false but impedes our ability to live happy and effective lives. The connection we had with animals, the environment and ‘others’ in society has been systematically broken, and I feel a responsibility to witness this rift.

My process starts with discovery, I make photographs of juxtapositions. These images can be finished pieces or give rise to ideas for further work. Collage of found imagery is also a strong basis for ideas, a process I return to often. The discovery of objects and their conjoining into assemblages is another strand of my practice. These pieces contain contrasts in scale, inside and outside differences, or domestic and industrial objects.

More recently I have stepped outside my usual practice, to use performance as a glue with which to join disparate elements, high and low culture, serious and humorous, childlike and adult. I feel that my greater use of comedy and performance better unifies my subject matter, process and personality.
